How does this SSL checker actually grade a domain?

It runs a full TLS handshake analysis against the domain's server — checking the certificate's validity and chain of trust, which protocol versions and cipher suites are supported, whether HSTS is enabled, and testing for a set of well-known vulnerabilities like Heartbleed, POODLE, and FREAK. Those results are combined into the same A+ through F grading scale used by industry-standard SSL testing services.

Why did my scan take so long?

A full TLS analysis involves testing dozens of protocol and cipher combinations against the live server, which realistically takes anywhere from 20 to 90 seconds for a domain that hasn't been scanned recently. Once a domain has been scanned, the result is cached for a period of time, so re-checking the same domain shortly after usually returns instantly instead of running a fresh scan.

Why is my grade lower than I expected even though my certificate is valid?

The grade reflects the entire TLS configuration, not just certificate validity — a perfectly valid certificate can still be paired with outdated protocol support (like TLS 1.0/1.1), weak cipher suites, or a missing HSTS header, all of which pull the grade down. Check the Security tab for the specific protocols and vulnerabilities that are dragging the score below what the certificate alone would suggest.

What should I do if a vulnerability shows as detected?

Most of the vulnerabilities checked here (Heartbleed, POODLE, FREAK, Logjam, and similar) are fixed at the server or TLS library level, not by changing anything about the certificate itself — updating OpenSSL or the equivalent TLS library to a current version and disabling legacy protocols resolves the vast majority of them. If you don't manage the server directly, forward the flagged items to whoever does.

Does a good SSL grade affect my search rankings?

Search engines have confirmed that HTTPS itself is a lightweight ranking signal, but the specific letter grade here isn't something they measure directly. That said, an expired certificate or major misconfiguration will trigger browser security warnings that scare visitors away long before it becomes an SEO problem, so treat this as a trust and security check first, with SEO benefits as a secondary effect.
