Methodology

How this data is collected

When you submit a domain, the tool looks for a sitemap at /sitemap.xml on that domain; if you paste a direct sitemap URL instead, it fetches that URL exactly. Up to 500 entries are parsed and validated — each <url> block is checked for a valid <loc>, a correctly formatted <lastmod>, and whether its URL duplicates another entry.

The tool also fetches the site's homepage and collects its internal links, then compares that list against the sitemap's URLs in both directions — flagging sitemap entries the homepage doesn't link to, and homepage links that aren't in the sitemap. This comparison is based on the homepage alone, not a full crawl of every page on the site, so it's best read as a representative sample.

Best practices for a healthy sitemap

A few habits worth keeping once you've found what's wrong.

Fix malformed entries first — a <url> block missing its <loc>, or with an invalid URL inside it, is simply skipped by search engines rather than causing an error anywhere visible.
Keep lastmod dates accurate, not just present. A lastmod that never changes even when the page does is worse than no lastmod at all, since search engines may start ignoring it as unreliable.
A sitemap URL with no internal link pointing to it is a classic orphan-page signal — either link to it from somewhere on the site, or reconsider whether it belongs in the sitemap.
Duplicate URLs in a sitemap don't cause errors, but they waste crawl budget for nothing — clean them up during your next sitemap regeneration.

What if my sitemap is a sitemap index, not a list of pages?

A sitemap index (a <sitemapindex> root) lists other sitemap files rather than pages directly — large sites often split their sitemap this way. This tool detects that and validates the sub-sitemap entries themselves, but lastmod, duplicate, and orphan checks only apply to an actual page-listing sitemap, since a sitemap index doesn't contain page URLs itself.
